The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project recently expanded the populations of endemic species in the Caveiro intervention area on the island of Pico. Since the start of the project, this area has been a target of interventions to restore the natural habitats there, namely the installation of fences to exclude livestock, preserve native and endemic species and prevent trampling, one of the main threats to these ecosystems.

During the last intervention, around 420 specimens were planted, including species such as the Azorean Blueberry (Vaccinium cylindraceum), the Short Leafed Juniper (Juniperus brevifolia) and the Azorean Holly (Ilex azorica).

This planting is part of Action C4.1 of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project – Good practices for the conservation of terrestrial habitats –, with the aim of preserving habitats considered to be priorities for conservation under the Habitats Directive.
