“Ataja Tus Matos” (Stop invasive plants) is the name of the project launched by the Fundación Canaria World Biosphere Reserve as part of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA, which focuses on prevention, early warning and rapid response against alien and invasive species. Due to complementary funding from the Canary Islands Government, the project’s educational programme will also extend to the 2022-2023 school year at the Basic Education Level.
This extension is based on the development of a wooden Games Box containing packs of illustrated cards, one circular and the other square, which can be used for up to six different activities. Memory, quick reflexes, strategy and critical thinking are fundamental for participating in this game, designed for small and large teams. Regarding levels, it is recommended for students from the 3ʳᵈ to the 6ᵗʰ grade of Basic Education, even though the kit has several levels and includes activities for children from the age of four.
Half a hundred students from CEO Tijarafe and CEIP La Rosa Camino Viejo (El Paso) schools have already debuted these activities, free of charge for the island’s schools, which, in this first phase, will be offered until the end of November, but will return from March 2023.
The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project is coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change.
