In 2021, the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, coordinated by the Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, created channels and walkways in the lagoon located in Fajã dos Cubres, on the island of São Jorge, with the aim of facilitating the circulation of water and thus preventing its eutrophication.
In order to better integrate this work into the landscape, the channels are now being lined with stone that is characteristic of the Region and on-site, ensuring a more cohesive look with the surrounding environment.
Two of the three walkways are already lined, and this is another important step in the development of Action C4.1, ‘Good practices for the conservation of terrestrial habitats’, which will improve a protected habitat that is a priority under the Habitats Directive, the coastal lagoons.
