As part of Action C3.2 – In-situ conservation of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, the territory is being surveyed for new populations of species protected by the Habitats Directive.
On São Jorge, previously unknown populations of Azorean Bishopsweed (Ammi trifoliatum) and Azorean Dock (Rumex azoricus) have been discovered along the PRC06SJO – Norte Pequeno walking trail. Nuclei of the Ivy-leafed Fern (Asplenium hemionitis), whose presence was initially only known at the beginning, were confirmed practically along the entire length of the trail. The continued presence of a population of Scabiosa nitens was also confirmed on arrival at Fajã do Mero. As only a few specimens of Azorean Bishopsweed were found, this population will be the target of reinforcement planting in the future.
