Within the framework of action C3.2 “In-situ conservation” of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, which foresees the improvement of the conservation status of endemic flora species in their natural 𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵 by reinforcing existing populations, a shade house was build in the Antigo Pomar das Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas (orchard) for the production and growth of plants that will later be introduced into nature.
Since the beginning of the project, about a thousand plants have been propagated at this place, including species such as 𝘙𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘹 𝘢𝘻𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴, 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘮 𝘢𝘻𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘮, 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘻𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢, 𝘌𝘶𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘺𝘨𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 ssp. 𝘴𝘵𝘺𝘨𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢, 𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘴 and 𝘈𝘻𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘪, as well as shrubby species such as Holly (𝘐𝘭𝘦𝘹 𝘢𝘻𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢), Laurustinus (𝘝𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘶𝘮 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘪) and Buckthorn (𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘢𝘻𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢). Soon, the first propagation of 𝘈𝘮𝘮𝘪 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮 and 𝘈𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘴 will take place.
With the introduction of these species in nature, the populations of endemic endangered species will be significantly reinforced, thus contributing to their conservation.
The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project aims to restore around 1,500 hectares of land area and conserve 19 species of flora, promoting the improvement of the conservation status of 𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵 and species present in the Habitats and Birds Directives.
