As part of Action C3.2, ‘In-situ conservation’, the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, in collaboration with the Pico Environment and Climate Action Service and the Faial Botanic Garden, carried out an action to plant native species on the island of Pico, specifically in the areas of Pico da Urze, Caveiro, Prainha and Caminho das Lagoas.
This initiative aims to conserve endangered species covered by the Habitats Directive by collecting seeds of these species, which are then propagated in the nurseries of the Botanic Garden on the island of Faial. After germinating and being cared for, the plants return to their natural habitat to be planted where the seeds were collected.
In the places mentioned, species such as Azorean Angelica (Angelica lignescens), Azorean Wild Lettuce (Lactuca watsoniana), Azorean Scabious (Scabiosa nitens) and Azorean Spurge (Euphorbia stygiana) were planted.
